CHARLOTTE — The holidays can be a tough time for Gold Star families – who lose loved ones who served their country.

That’s why some volunteers are showing them extra love this season.

The Snowball Express flight is taking dozens of Charlotte-area families on a magical trip to Disney World. American Airlines and the Gary Sinise Foundation' fly more than 1,700 Gold Star families nationwide.

Even Santa Claus sees the children off to a warmer destination. Families say it's a welcome relief from working to overcome grief.

“We’re all so honored to be a part of this and I think the families know that they’re not forgotten and that we love them and that they’re not forgotten,” parent Julie Milani says of losing her husband, Jason Lester.

The all-expense paid Snowball Express trip takes families to Disney World in Florida for five days.
