CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Thousands of law enforcement officers will fill Uptown this Summer for the 2020 Republican National Convention, but experts say phones will be one of the biggest potential targets.

  • Phones could be targeted via fake and/or public wifi signals around convention center.
  • Cyber security experts say to protect yourself by turning off wifi unless connecting to a known network.

Cyber security experts expect hackers to set up fake wifi signals the week of the convention, or try to attack people on public wifi.

Secure wifi networks will be in place around RNC sites specifically for politicians and security personnel, while many government officials will likely bring phones with upgraded security.

“If hackers can monetize data and make use of it for their personal gain, they are trying to steal it from us,” Mike Holland of cyber security firm Fortalice said.

During the week of the RNC, Holland said it’s a good idea to turn off your wifi, unless you’re connecting to a known network.

The RNC is August 24-27, in Charlotte.
