CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- As we honor our veterans this week, one health care system is re-examining how it cares for them.

  • Iredell Health System is rolling out it’s “Veteran Recognition Program”
  • Volunteers also identify veteran patients staying at the hospital and bring them the newspaper, thank them for their service and offer a free meal to their family.
  • Iredell Health System is gathering veterans focus groups early next year to get input on how to better tailor its care

Iredell Health System is rolling out it’s “Veteran Recognition Program”.

Its hospital has reserved veteran-only parking spaces. Volunteers also identify veteran patients staying at the hospital and bring them the newspaper, thank them for their service and offer a free meal to their family.

Soon, staff will have annual training on veterans issues like PTSD, grief, and service-related injuries.

“Really that understanding, and we call it cultural sensitivity, to that patient population is really important and one thing we’re focused on,” Iredell Health System assistant vice president of nursing Cherie Smith said.
