CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Momentum is building behind an effort to build another light rail line that would run between southeast Mecklenburg County and western Gaston County.

  • The Charlotte City Council is set to vote Tuesday night
  • The Belmont City Council has already passed a resolution
  • The Silver Line being proposed would stretch from Matthews through Uptown to the airport and all the way into Belmont in Gaston County

The Charlotte City Council is set to vote Tuesday night on kick starting the design phase of the Lynx Silver Line, potentially putting up $50 million just to get it started.

While the Blue Line runs north to south in Mecklenburg County, the Silver Line being proposed would stretch from Matthews through Uptown to the airport and all the way into Belmont in Gaston County.

The Belmont City Council has already passed a resolution promising to work with other cities which would benefit from the Silver Line and to help pay for it.

“Clearly, there will be money that will be needed on both sides of the river. We don't know what ultimate funding sources will be needed for this project,” Belmont city manager Adrian Miller said.

The Silver Line will be twice the length of the Blue Line, meeting the blue line at the 11th St. Station and would cost upwards of a -billion- dollars to complete.

Belmont City Council officials say they plan to be at that meeting in Charlotte which starts at 5.p.m
