SMITHFIELD N.C. – A teen has been charged after deputies say she poisoned her ex-boyfriend’s sports drink.

Makayla Gwen Bridges, 18, of Apex, was charged with distributing noxious food on October 3, 2019.

According to an incident report from Johnson County deputies, originally, the incident was dispatched as an overdose.

After further investigation, authorities discovered that the drink had been poisoned. The 17-year-old boy experienced burning in his throat, vomiting and abdominal pains after drinking the beverage.

He was taken to Johnston Medical Center where he is expected to make a full recovery.

Police took a bottle of Dawn dishwashing detergent as evidence.

Bridges is held at the Johnston County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond.
