AVERY COUNTY, N.C. -- A snow day is coming for one county, but it’s not what you think.

Tuesday, the Avery County Department of Transportation will have its first snow day of the season.

This is a time when workers come in to test out all of their equipment, pack their trucks and drive their routes as if snow was actually coming down. The DOT says these days are important to prepare for what's ahead and get drivers used to their routes.

Officials say there are usually around 30 snow events a year so these trucks are always ready to go.

The DOT says the county has seen snow fall from October until April some years.
