CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hurricane Dorian hit the North Carolinas coast, but it hit the Bahamas harder, devastating the islands.

A Charlotte man, born and raised in the Bahamas, is trying to give back to his home country to help people recover from the storm.

Elvado Laing was born and raised in Freeport, Grand Bahama before moving to the U.S. for college.

His entire family still lives on two of the islands hit hardest by the storm.

He's asking the community for help to collect items such as water, clothes, and diapers so he can bring them to his hometown to help.

"Whole communities are gone. Ten thousand to 12,000 homes are gone, totally wiped out. People have nothing. So it's that bad. It's a dire state right now,” Laing said.

Laing's fundraiser is Sunday afternoon. The donation drop-off site is at the Soca Fit studio on Albemarle Road in Charlotte. The event is from 2 to 7 p.m.
