NORTH CAROLINA -- The extreme heat is taking a toll on the state, causing heat advisories to be put in place in several areas.

  • In Charlotte, MEDIC says it responded to nine heat-related emergency calls on Friday. On Saturday, the number grew to 13.
  • The Parks and Recreations Department in Durham closed all outdoor swimming pools Sunday afternoon.
  • Officials say the number of people coming to the Polar Ice ice skating rink has tripled, and they're expected to stay up in the next few weeks.

In Charlotte, MEDIC says it responded to nine heat-related emergency calls on Friday. On Saturday, the number grew to 13.

Emergency crews say some of those calls came from people gathering in Uptown for the big international soccer match.

Across the Triangle, several facilities closed because of the heat. The Parks and Recreations Department closed all outdoor swimming pools Sunday afternoon.

They also closed Little River and Rentals at Lake Michie starting at noon.

However, some families found a way to stay cool at the Polar Ice in Wake Forest. Officials say the number of people coming to the ice skating rink has tripled, and they're expected to stay up in the next few weeks.
