GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- There is now new information in the Gaston County police chase that left one man dead and another seriously injured.
- Deputies attempted to stop a vehicle driving erratically
- 41-year-old Joshua Soule would not stop and eventually lost control of his car
- He ran from his car and the car ended up hitting two pedestrians, killing one of them
It happened Sunday night just before 7:30 on the intersection of Highland Street and Rankin Avenue in Gastonia.
According to the Gaston County Sheriff's Office, a sheriff's deputy spotted a gold Ford Taurus traveling southbound on U.S.-321 driving erratically and started to follow the vehicle.
Sheriff's deputies say they attempted to stop 41-year-old Joshua Soule, but he did not stop and started driving faster.
They say the driver eventually lost control of the car, collided and hit an A/C unit near a house. He then ran from the car. The sheriff's office said that's when the car took off and hit two pedestrians, Shawn Smith and another victim, who has not yet been named.
The second victim has been at the hospital undergoing surgery but is expected to be okay.
Soule was arrested a short time later. He is charged with DUI and failing to stop for officers. He also has been charged with second degree murder.
His bond is now set for $2 million.
Assistant Deputy Chief Garry Williams says body camera played a role in the investigation.
