CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A $150 million project to expand and upgrade the CityLYNX Gold Line means some closures are coming soon.

  • The CityLYNX Gold Line Streetcar service will be replaced with a connector bus service starting June 3
  • One portion of the project near Hawthorne Gold Line bridge is a bit behind schedule
  • Officials say they looking forward to hopefully completing the project by the end of next year, or the beginning of 2021

Starting June 3, the CityLYNX Gold Line Streetcar service will be replaced with a connector bus service while the entire line is shut down.

Organizers say it’s because they’re in phase two of the project to upgrade the line. They need to create new platforms to make them easily accessible to everyone.

One portion of the project near Hawthorne Gold Line bridge is a bit behind schedule, the tranist planning manager says, but they’re pushing foward to connect all of Uptown.

“This is a great addition,” CATS transit planning manager E. David McDonald II said. “Phase one opened in 2015. We’ve been working several years now to expand it. And when phase one opened it opened with the replica trolley vehicles. When phase two opens, it will go from one-and-a-half miles to four miles of alignment. We’ll go from six stops to 17.”

During construction, stops cannot be used until phase two opens with the new modern streetcar vehicles.

Organizers say they looking forward to hopefully completing the project by the end of next year, or the beginning of 2021.

Destinations serviced along the existing Gold Line will be accessible via the CityLYNX Connector Bus Service. The CityLYNX Connector will operate on the same schedule as the current CityLYNX Gold Line Streetcar service.
