MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- It was a tough weekend for the Mooresville Police Department and the community after Officer Jordan Sheldon was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop late Saturday night.

Police say 28-year-old Michael Aldana shot and killed the officer after being pulled over. Sunday night, hundreds gathered for a candlelight vigil at Mooresville Commons to honor the fallen officer.

Sheldon was with the Mooresville Police Department for six years, working with their K9 unit. Speakers shared stories of hope about a man they consider a hero.

"My daughter attends Ardell Charter Academy, and two years ago, he came and did career day with his K9 and he's just the nicest guy ever,” said Michelle Roerig

"It has to be a celebration of his life and of his honor and what he did for the community,” said Ethan Wyatt, a member of the Fraternal Order of Police

A memorial setup at the police department has grown over the past 24 hours as people help lift the spirits of those who served alongside Officer Sheldon.

The community has dropped off flowers, keepsakes, and even food for the officers who will continue serving Mooresville with heavy hearts.

The memorial doubled in size Monday with people who didn't know Officer Sheldon personally still thanking him for his service.

The department says it's been important to see just how much residents care.
