RALEIGH, N.C. -- A new proposal aims to eliminate absentee ballot fraud in North Carolina.

  • The new bill would make it a misdemeanor to buy or sell completed absentee ballots.
  • The bill appropriates more than $345,000 in part for the NC Board of Elections to hire more staff.
  • More District 9 Coverage

Lawmakers decided to tighten current laws following the problems uncovered in the 9th district related to ballot fraud.

The new bill would make it a misdemeanor to buy or sell completed absentee ballots.

The bill appropriates more than $345,000 in part for the NC Board of Elections to hire more staff.

"I certainly can't guarantee it is in the budget, but I will be working to make sure it is," said primary sponsor Democrat Rep. Cynthia Ball of Wake County." It's not a lot of money, so I'm hopeful that we can find a place for this modest amount of money for the tremendous impact it is going to have."

The bill has bi-partisan support.

Republican Rules Chairman David Lewis is the co-sponsor of the bill.
