ELON, N.C. -- A play at Elon University commemorates the victims and survivors of the Parkland school shooting that happened one year ago.

  • The play is directed by an Elon University student who survived the mass shooting
  • She is a performing arts student
  • The play is titled "Church and State"

The play is actually directed by an Elon University student, Kali Clougherty, who survived the mass shooting at Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, last year.

As a performing arts student she took on the role of directing the play "Church and State" that's being performed at universities across the country.

It tells the story of a North Carolina senator who’s torn on the issue of gun violence after a school shooting. While struggling with his newfound perspective, he’s shot and killed during a campaign acceptance speech.

“If senators and governors had put themselves in my shoes, of my classmates' shoes, then they would have understood that what we went through was something way bigger than money,” said Kali Clogherty, Parkland shooting survivor and Elon University student.

Clougherty says she plans to direct and perform in more shows with messages against gun violence in the future.
