CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The most recent revaluation has property values rising in Mecklenburg County, which has some residents concerned they won't be able to afford their homes.

  • The Board of Commissioners and the city met with senior citizens in East Charlotte to answer questions about the revaluations.
  • Many people are concerned the possible 40 percent increase in property values will be too much for them to handle.
  • The deadline to file an appeal over a property revaluation is May 20.

Monday morning, representatives from the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners and the city met with senior citizens in East Charlotte to answer questions about the revaluations.

Many people are concerned the possible 40 percent increase in property values will be too much for them to handle.

Mark Jerrell, the county commission representative for district 4, helped explain a variety of programs the city and county are offering to help keep residents in their homes.

"There's a lot of anxiety in the community, and we want to make sure everyone understands all the options that are out there," Jerrell said. "We're not in the business of taking homes or having people lose their homes. As their representatives, we're going to make sure we do everything we can to find relief for people."

The deadline to file an appeal over a property revaluation is May 20. Tax bills will be mailed out in August.
