CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- More than one in five taxpayers are expected to owe money on their taxes, according to a report from the Government Accountability Office.

Experts say part of the reason is the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act lowering the amount money withheld from their paycheck. Some folks paying less in taxes this year may still end up owing on their returns because they’re not withholding enough.

“Even though the taxpayer's total tax went down, their withholding went down by even more,” CPA at Scharf Pera & CO Brian Boswell said. “People have been surprised. There's been a lot of changes for people.”

The IRS has a withholdings calculator, free to use.
