The company is raising truck driver pay in February. It says the average driver will earn 89 cents a mile, or $87,500 a year, to help recruit drivers.

By the end of 2016, American Trucking Association says the industry was short 36,500 drivers. TransTech, one of the largest commercial driving instructors in the region, says it's common for students to be recruited and are offered jobs before they're certified.

“We get calls almost daily as to companies that say, ‘hey, I'm looking for more drivers,” TransTech site manager Rock Canady said. “You can really set yourself up to take care of your families the way that most of us want to."

Median pay, industry-wide, spiked more than 15 percent from 2013 to 2018, according to ATA.
