CHARLOTTE -- An attempted kidnapping didn't go the way the suspect planned, as he ended up in one of the worst places he could be -- a karate school.

  • After a man attempted to kidnap her, a woman went into a karate school.
  • When her would-be kidnapper followed her, the karate teacher and students protected her and called 911.
  • The suspect faces a number of charges including kidnapping.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says a woman was walking along a Statesville Road sidewalk Thursday night when a man approached her in his car and tried to abduct her, but the woman wasn't having it.

She was able to escape and she made her way into a karate school. The reason it was done right is because of what the people inside the karate school did.

CMPD says the suspect, August Williams, attempted to pull the woman into her vehicle. When she came into the school, rather than Williams driving away, he followed her in.

Officers say that’s when the karate instructor and students protected the woman and called 911. They say Williams left the building and tried to hide, but the students kept him in sight. Police were able to arrest him after a brief struggle.

While officers say the karate students didn't rough the man up, the woman chose a pretty good place to get help.

Williams faces a number of charges including kidnapping, assault on an officer, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia.
