LEXINGTON, N.C. – This week marks one year since a fire destroyed the Dixie Smokestack in Lexington.

It has been a year since the massive blaze, which firefighters label suspicious. The historic, 100-year old building had been vacant for years.

Two days ago, crews started demolition work on the smokestack. They have to be careful though because it stands next to active train routes and railroad tracks.

Built in 1901, the Dixie Smokestack has stood as a pillar to the community, once a place of employment for thousands in the area, marking a piece of history for the city’s stamp on the furniture industry.

City Manager Alan Carson said demolition of the property is scheduled to be complete by January 1.
