High pressure building in from the north today will bring the return of cool conditions. A developing low pressure system set to take aim at the Carolinas over the weekend may bring our first shot of wintry weather across the Piedmont.

Expect a mix of sun and clouds Tuesday as a disturbance works in from the west. With a cooling, northwesterly flow resuming Tuesday, temperatures will be knocked down by a good 15 degrees from Monday's. Highs will warm into the low to mid 50s under partly cloudy skies. A few upslope snow showers will be possible for the mountains Tuesday night into Wednesday where accumulations up to a half an inch will be possible.

The next few days through Friday will feature quiet and chilly weather. Highs will only manage to reach into the 40s both Wednesday and Thursday with low 50s on Friday.

The weekend is the more interesting part of the forecast. A low pressure system that will be moving northward from the Gulf Coast late Friday into Saturday coupled with cold high pressure building in from the north will allow for the potential to see some kind of wintry precipitation across the Piedmont and of course into the mountains. The details regarding what kind of precipitation (snow, sleet, rain, or a mix) along with how much still remain up-in-the air. Any minor change in the track or strength of this set up will have a large impact to the forecast. We'll continue to nail down the details in the coming days.
