BOONE, N.C. – Watauga County has already missed three days of school due to weather and it's only November.

  • The county saw snow, ice and a heavy rain that flooded the area
  • There are mixed reviews from parents and residents about the plan
  • Students will have to go to school on Saturdays when there is one snow day that week

The district tried to hold school on Saturday but decided to cancel. Some parents had mixed opinions of the district’s idea of having kids attend school last Saturday.

“It's uncommon for us to miss three in November. It's off to a quick start,” communications director Garret Price said.

A quick start that has everyone's eyes on the winter ahead

“There is an eye on it in June. There is a plan in place,” Price said.

The plan is for students to go to school on Saturdays when there is one snow day that week.

“Because we missed two, that sort of did affect that decision and of course with big games coming up this weekend there were several community conflicts,” Price said

Students can miss about 15 days of school per year before the district has to start making those days up. With the possibility of a harsh winter, the district has to come up with a plan to make up those extra days.

“As soon as we miss the first day of school, we have to figure out how we are going to make them up. We continue to advocate with our state leaders about more calendar flexibility for the mountain counties,” Price said.

Last year students missed 20 days for snow. They went to school on Saturdays twice and had two days removed from their spring break.

“I think they need to make that up. They don't need to have too many days off. I think a snow day on Saturday wouldn’t hurt anything,” Boone resident Greg Pruess said.

However, not everyone agrees.

“I feel like it takes away from time I don't have with my child being at school so it's more convenient to take it off at the end and have a little less summer,” parent Jessica Marsh said.

“I think they should make up for it in the summer maybe instead of Saturdays because no one is going to pay attention anyway so it's kind of a wasted day,” Boone resident Evan Burrow said.

The district says with so many snow days possibly in our future, Saturday school is important.
