GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina University Chancellor Cecil P. Staton announced today that head football coach, Scottie Montgomery, has been fired.

This means Montgomery will not coach ECU's final game of the season Saturday against NC State.

"As much as we would have liked the outcome to be different, the progress of a program is ultimately measured by its competitiveness, win total and championships," Staton said. "It is our decision to move in a different direction with new leadership. "

Montgomery had two years left on his contract, which includes his base annual salary of $400,000, which will be paid for by the athletics department .

Montgomery served as head football coach for ECU since December 2015.
