ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. —  A gunman shot and killed 11 people during a ceremony at a Pittsburgh synagogue on Saturday.

  • 11 killed, 6 injured in mass shooting at synagogue
  • Suspect identified as Robert Bowers
  • Charges filed against Bowers

The suspect, 46-year-old Robert Bowers, opened fire during a baby naming ceremony at the Tree of Life synagogue.

At least six others were wounded in attack, including four police officers who responded to the scene, authorities said.

Bowers, who later surrendered to law enforcement, made anti-Jewish comments during the shooting, according to authorities.

At the time of the shooting, three different congregations were holding services at the Tree of Life synagogue, according officials.

Bowers, who was shot several times after trading gunfire with police, was taken to a hospital.

The FBI is investigating the shooting as a hate crime.

Robert Jones, head of the FBI's Pittsburgh office, said worshippers were "brutallly murdered by a gunman targeting them simply because of their faith."

Bowers was armed with an assault rifle and at least three handguns, according to the FBI.

Investigators said Bowers' motives are not yet known.

President Donald Trump called the shooting "far more devastating than anyone thought."

"All of America is in mourning over the mass murder of Jewish Americans at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh," Trump tweeted. "We pray for those who perished and their loved ones, and our hearts go out to the brave police officers who sustained serious injuries."

Before attending a campaign rally in southern Illinois, Trump told reporters he would be going to Pittsburgh. However, the president didn not offer details as to when the trip will take place.

Johnathan Greenblatt, chief executive officer of the Anti-Defamation League, said Saturday's shooting is likely the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in U.S. history.

"Our hearts break for the families of those killed an injured at the Tree of Life Synagogue, and for the entire Jewish community of Pittsburgh," Greenblatt said in a statement.

The Tree of Life synagogue is located in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood, which is known as the hub of the city's Jewish community.

The Department of Justice announced late Saturday that 29 charges had been filed against Bowers, including 11 counts of using a firearm to commit murder.
