MONROE, NORTH CAROLINA -- Police are investigating a suspicious incident involving a possible police impersonator.

  • A man reported that while traveling on U.S. 601 North, near the Monroe Expressway, he was stopped by a solid, dark in color, Ford Taurus police-type sedan
  • Suspect reportedly wore a police-type duty belt and displayed a badge that was not of the correct jurisdiction

On October 6, a man reported that while traveling on U.S. 601 North near the Monroe Expressway, he was stopped by a solid, dark in color, Ford Taurus police-type sedan with a light bar on top.

According to him, a while male in his late-30s to early 40s approached the car dressed like a police officer. He reportedly wore a police-type duty belt and displayed a badge that was not of the correct jurisdiction. When question about who he was, the alleged "officer" got back in his vehicle and drove away.

“While we believe this is an isolated incident, we take these cases very seriously and want to make sure our residents are safe,” said Monroe Police Chief Bryan Gilliard. “We pride ourselves on our professionalism and we take great offense to someone representing themselves as an officer in our community.”

According to authorities, individuals concerned about the identity of a police vehicle attempting a stop, should slow down and turn on their hazard lights and call Union County Communications at (704) 289-1591 to advise them of the location.
