GREENSBORO, N.C. -- It’s finally time to hang things up to dry for Greensboro Fire’s swift water rescue team. The crew spent over a week in Pender County, just outside of Wilmington.

  • Senior Firefighter Nicholas Holder tells us he’s been deployed to several natural disasters but Hurricane Florence was one of the worst storms he’s seen
  • Holder says his team alone rescued several hundreds of people
  • Holder says if it's one thing he took away from the storm it's, “When the meteorologist and when everybody is saying to evacuate, listen."

Senior Firefighter Nicholas Holder tells us he’s been deployed to several natural disasters, but Hurricane Florence was one of the worst storms he’s seen.

"The devastation was all from water, all from flooding, not a lot of damage from the winds, it was all just where the waters had rose and taken a lot of everything that people had."

Holder says his team alone, rescued several hundreds of people all by either zodiac boats and helicopter extracts.

He says although the storm brought on the worst flooding he’s ever seen, they were familiar with the area from a previous deployment.

For now, their gear is hanging up to dry at Station 5 in Greensboro. Holder says if it's one thing he took away from the storm it's, “When the meteorologist and when everybody is saying to evacuate, listen. A lot of the rescues we did wouldn't have to be performed if people had taken heed to that advice."

The team is home for now but they say they’re getting their equipment dried and ready to go in case they have to head back out.
