Each storm is ranked by central pressure, including maximum winds (kts or nautical miles per hour), minimum pressure (hPa), landfall month, landfall day and landfall time.
The number one strongest storm to ever hit the Tar Heel State was Hurricane Hazel in 1954, which was a Category 4 storm, with 115 kts and 938 hPa. Hurricane Gloria ranked number two as a Category 2 storm, with 90 kts and 942 hPa.
If you're wondering what that looks like, the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale says anything between 113 and 136 kts (or 130-156 mph) can cause severe damage to well-built homes, snap trees and power outages can last weeks to possibly months.
