CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Every Sunday for the last 40 years, Carroll Cleveland Franklin has made his way to Saint Paul Baptist Church from miles away.

  • Saint Paul Baptist Church leaders say parishioners were pushed out of their homes
  • The city contributed $4.4 million to the project
  • Senior apartment units start at $510.

Now, the neat buildings he walks by in Charlotte’s Belmont neighborhood mark where he’ll soon call home.

“I got it and I’m so glad God made it true,” Franklin said about his dream to have a senior apartment he could afford. "It’s a burden lifted off me. It’s wonderful, and to be at peace knowing I can afford it."

Come October, he’ll live in Centra Square which is comprised of 112 mixed-income units. It’s an effort by Saint Paul Baptist Church after leaders say parishioners were pushed out of the neighborhood by pricier units. The city contributed $4.4 million to project.

"Persons who have traditionally lived here can still remain here at an affordable rate,” Saint Paul Baptist Church senior pastor Robert Scott says.

Available senior apartment units start at $510.
