UNION COUNTY, N.C. -- A strange friendship has formed for two animals after Sammy, a neglected horse was found wandering the streets in Union County.

Sammy is a silver dapple mini horse who was all skin and bones and had trouble walking, according to caretaker Darlene Kindle.

She says she received a call from a shelter in South Carolina in late July, but when her golden retriever Molley saw Sammy she went right to him.

"Molley knew Sam needed a friend. He was scared, he was very scared," said Kindle.

Kindle says Sam still has a long road of recovery ahead, but says she is overwhelmed and thrilled that Sam is making the public aware of equine neglect and abuse.
