YORK COUNTY, N.C. – Dozens of York County lawyers want the county's grand jury disbanded and grand jurors prohibited from serving again.

  • The group of lawyers, including the chief public defender, signed a motion requesting to quash 904 June indictments
  • The motion states that it is “completely inconceivable and impossible” that a grand jury could deliver 904 indictments in a single day
  • Both sides are set to present arguments in York County Circuit Court Friday at 9 a.m.

The group of lawyers, including the chief public defender, signed a motion filed in York County court last week requesting to quash 904 June indictments.

The motion states that it is “completely inconceivable and impossible” that a grand jury could deliver 904 indictments in a single day.

The motion goes on to say, “in contrast, the number of indictments presented in the months leading up to the Grand Jury convented on June 14, 2018 is as follows: 438 were sent in February, 347 in March, 289 in April, and 387 in May.”

The motion says the grand jury would have to spend an average of 39 seconds on each indictment to make the quick turnaround.

“As such, the grand jury was unable to fully consider all the evidence and deliberate accordingly as their oath requires,” the motion states.

York County Chief Public Defender Harry Dest signed the motion and says via phone, “The motion speaks for itself.”

Spectrum News reached out to the solicitor’s office and haven’t heard back.
