MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- Birthdays are about celebrating with friends and getting a few presents. One girl form Mooresville decided she wanted to do something different for her birthday this year.

  • Mariah Woolford  asked friends and family to donate food and toys to Gaston County Animal Care
  • She loves animals, and wanted to help out the four-legged friends in the community who are waiting to find their forever home

Instead of asking for presents for herself, 8-year-old Mariah Woolford asked friends and family to donate food and toys to Gaston County Animal Care.

Mariah says she loves animals, and wanted to help out the four-legged friends in the community who are waiting to find their forever home.

"Dogs and cats should get treated the same way as dogs and cats that aren't adopted, because they should have the same kind of love that they get," Mariah said.

"She's got such a kind heart, and Mariah feels like everybody matters," said Ashlee Bourassa, Mariah's mom. "She wants to know 'What can I do?' And when she knows that these dogs don't have homes, that's what she wants to know, what can I do? What can I do to help?"
