CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Rising costs from tariffs may lead to a higher unemployment rate.

  • More than a thousand jobs were lost last month
  • A NRF study in May said the then-proposed $50 billion in tariffs could cost 134,000 U.S. jobs
  • Since that report, President Donald Trump announced another $34 billion in tariffs

That's according to the National Retail Federation, which said the U.S. added more than 50,000 retail jobs in the past year ending in June. However, more than a thousand were lost last month.

The NRF says the U.S. trade war with China may be a turning point.

"These tariffs are ultimately going to undermine the economic progress we've seen in the past year,” Bethany Aronhalt of National Retail Federation said. “And destroy jobs across the economy, not just in retail, but other jobs across the economy."

A NRF study in May said the then-proposed $50 billion in tariffs could cost 134,000 U.S. jobs, losing four jobs for every one gained.

Since that report, President Donald Trump announced another $34 billion in tariffs which took effect Friday, and threatened an extra $200 billion in import tariffs.
