ALBEMARLE, N.C. -- Police in Albemarle are investigating after a popular youth football coach was found dead in a home on Reid Street.

Thirty-one-year-old Derryl Watkins was found a little after 7:30p.m. Tuesday.

Family and friends say he was extremely community oriented, family focused, and a man of God, which is why his death is even more shocking.

“I think these kids will always remember Coach D,” said fellow Coach Derek Turner. “You know just the little every day, telling jokes and being more than just a coach. Being a friend and being that positive role model that they needed so badly. I don’t think they’ll ever forget him.”

The case is still under investigation.

A vigil is planned for Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Albemarle High School.
