CHARLOTTE -- An elderly woman is dead after police say she was attacked by dogs Monday afternoon.

It happened in a home off Luke Crossing Drive near the Arboretum.

Police say 86-year-old Bessie Flowers was visiting family at the home when their two pit bulls mauled her. She died at the scene.

Neighbors were distraught to hear what happened, and some say the dogs have been aggressive in the past.

“They attacked another dog two times, and no one did anything about it. They never attacked a person, but they attacked two dogs,” one neighbor said.

Police say three years ago they received a call about two aggressive animals at the home, but that report was unsubstantiated at the time.

The pit bulls, which were properly licensed and vaccinated, are now being held under quaratine for the next 10 days and will continue to be held at Animal Care and Control while police investigate.
