WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The City of Wilmington and the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce are trying to make some good out of a bad situation.

  • They hosted a "Wilmington Strong" Hurricane Relief charity concert at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater
  • This charity concert was free of charge, but individuals and corporations contributed with donations
  • All the money collected is going to the United Way of the Cape Fear Area's Hurricane Florence fund

On Saturday, they hosted a "Wilmington Strong" Hurricane Relief charity concert at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater.

"Wilmington strong is to let this community know how we pull together as a community and as a region to help one another out," said Mayor Bill Saffo.

This charity concert was free of charge, but individuals and corporations contributed with donations. All the money collected is going to the United Way of the Cape Fear Area's Hurricane Florence fund and will target local organizations that work regionally.

The four organizations benefiting are NourishNC, Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC, Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministries (WARM) and Salvation Army of the Cape Fear Region.

"The reality is that the Salvation Army can't do this by themselves," said Major Mark Craddock, Salvation Army of the Cape Fear Region Corps Officer. "It takes a group of people, a community coming together to help each other. And so, events like this are fun, they're energetic and raise funds. They help lots of people for a long time to come."

So far, the charity concert has raised more than $400,000, and they don't plan on stopping there.

"It's just great to see this outpouring of love and outpouring of help coming out," said Mayor Saffo.
