DURHAM, N.C. -- Food insecurity continues to be a concern for many during the pandemic.

One woman in Durham is spearheading an effort to do something about it.

“It’s important to me that people know that this is a Black woman-led idea,” said Katina Parker, organizer of Feed Durham.

They’ve collectively put food in the hands of thousands people in the Bull City through a contact-free cookout.

“I’m doing this because I’ve been hungry before," Parker explains. “When I was hungry, one of the things that kept me going was eating good food.”

Over the last several months, Parker and her volunteers have cooked the food, which has been purchased from local farms or businesses.

Those who can pick it up are welcome. Otherwise, the food is donated to places like the Durham Rescue Mission or Urban Ministries.

“It’s important to me that we see images of Black and Brown folks spearheading ideas to help our communities, especially now.”

Donations are accepted through the group’s GoFundMe page.
