A Charlotte professional skateboarder and mentor was arrested and charged in "a disturbing series of sex assaults" against children, according to a news release from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Wayne "Ray" Goff, 52, was charged with four counts of indecent liberties with a minor and one count of a statutory sex offense March 21 and was released from jail on bond.

He was arrested again May 2 at his home in Gaston County after the Crimes Against Children Unit got ten more warrants for indecent liberties, officials said.

The incidents happened in the 1990s, but the latest one that was reported was in 2010, according authorities.

Goff would often take young skaters with him when he traveled for events and competitions, police said.

"Mr. Goff used his role as a mentor to sexually assault children, the majority of them boys," Mike Allinger, public information specialist with CMPD, said in a news release.

The police investigation into the incidents began in February when the CMPD's Special Victims Division got an email from a victim, asking for help to report abuse from the 1990s, the release said. The victim was 13 years old at the time of the incident. Detectives interviewed the victim and discovered more victims as they built a case against Goff, according to Allinger.

"The CMPD is aware of 8 victims so far but believes there are potentially many more victims who deserve justice for the heinous acts Mr. Goff committed," Allinger said.

After Goff's most recent arrest this week, he was taken to Gaston County Jail where he was held without bond before being taken to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.

"The CMPD seeks justice for all victims regardless of when the crime occurred," Allinger said.
