Severe storms moved across the St. Louis area Saturday afternoon uprooting and toppling trees. Police said a woman died in the city of St. Louis late Saturday afternoon when a tree fell on her car with her inside on the 4100 block of Chouteau.

Heavy rain flooded major roadways bringing traffic to a standstill.

A line of severe thunderstorms pushed through the St. Louis area Friday night, bringing strong wind and hail. There were numerous reports of downed trees and power lines in south St. Louis County and Columbia, Illinois.

Saturday afternoon saw another line of storms move through the area. Damaging winds were the main threat and toppled trees in St. Louis County and Madison County, Illinois. 

Amren Missouri reported more than 70,000 customers without power in the St. Louis metro region Saturday evening.

Heat dome breaks down

The ridge that has been over the region and helped drive temperatures into the 90s and heat indices above 105 degrees has begun to breakdown. As it does so, it will allow for a cold front to cross the area, bringing some relief to the heat and humidity. 

This relief comes courtesy of showers and thunderstorms. Some of these storms could become severe.

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed the St. Louis area under an enhanced risk (level 3 out of 5) for severe weather Saturday afternoon into the evening. The primary threat from storms will be damaging winds and large hail. 

Another chance for showers and storms overnight into Sunday morning, but storms do not look to become severe.
