In this week’s Unscrambled report, Jill Urban looks at how parents can easily control the types of content their children are allowed to watch.
These days there's so much programming for kids, but in the mix are plenty of programs you may not find appropriate. Well, did you know there is a Parental Control feature that can help you and your child navigate the channel line up in a kid-friendly way?
"There are actual parental controls as part of the settings on your remote control. You simply press 'settings' and you can go in and set up whether you want to restrict a channel or a program," explains Alix Cottrell, G.V.P of Video Product at Time Warner Cable.
By following the prompts on your remote control, you can either hide certain channels from the guide altogether, so your kids will never see them, or you can set up a PIN so they will need to ask permission first. You can filter what you want to block by channel, air-time, content or rating. Speaking of ratings, did you know that when you are looking for a show, you can look to the bottom of the screen to get a gauge as to whether or not it’s appropriate for your family.
"Another great feature is when you get a search result you will get ratings information, so Metacritic ratings and Common Sense Media ratings which is a guide for parents," says Cottrell.
Now once you set up your parental controls, the settings will apply to all platforms. So if your child is watching on a tablet or on a smartphone using the the TWC TV app, the settings from your set-top box will still be in place.
And the parental controls are easy to switch on and off, so you can unlock those channels when the kids aren’t around.
