GOLDSBORO - In the back of the Elmwood Cemetery in Goldsboro, the youngest serviceman killed in action during the Vietnam War was laid to rest in 1969 without a headstone and little recognition because he wasn't old enough to be in the Marines.
Dan Bullock joined the USMC at just 14 years of age, doctoring his birth certificate so he could serve his country.
Only a month into service in Vietnam, Bullock was killed.
In 2000, Bullock finally got his headstone, paid for by talk show host Sally Jessy Raphael. After that, is when many veterans became aware of Bullock and his history.
One in particular is Bill Boyd. A Korean War veteran.
Boyd says he feels connected to Bullock because their mothers both died when they were thirteen and in an effort to find a place to belong they both enlisted in the Marines.
Boyd says Bullock is the hero though because he actually fought and died in combat. He's spent the past seven years with a street sign in Bullock's name, trying to find the spot Goldsboro would approve of naming PFC Dan Bullock. And he finally did.
A dedication ceremony for the street sign will take place Saturday, May 27 at 2 p.m.
