The bodies of two hikers who went missing near Mount Katahdin have been found.
Wednesday, park officials said the body of Esther Keiderling was discovered at around 1 p.m. between two known trails.
"It is with deep regret that we share the news that today, at approximately 1:00 p.m. today (June 4), search teams discovered the body of Esther Keiderling off the Tablelands, in a wooded area between two known trails," officials stated in a release.
Her father's body was discovered Tuesday afternoon, park officials said. The two hikers were last seen at Baxter State Park on Sunday.
"We regret to share that at approximately 2:45 p.m. today (June 3), a Maine Warden Service K9 search team located the body of Tim Keiderling on the Tableland, near the summit of Katahdin," officials stated in a news release.
The father and daughter had last been seen near the summit of Katahdin in an area called the Katahdin Tablelands, officials said.
Both Tim Keiderling, 58, and Esther, 28, are from Ulster Park, N.Y. They had left Abol Campground on Sunday to hike to the summit, according to park officials. They were last seen at about 10:15 a.m. heading toward the summit.
Baxter State Park Rangers began searching Monday when the Keiderlings’ vehicle was found in the day-use parking lot.
Park rangers searched the Abol Trail and the Hunt Trail, including the Katahdin Tablelands, park officials said.
The search was expanded Tuesday morning and included more than 30 game wardens, a Maine Forest Service helicopter and a pair of helicopters from the Maine Army National Guard.
The park had closed Hunt and Abol trails to assist the search.
Twenty-five game Wardens, four game warden K9 teams and 21 Baxter State Park Rangers searched the mountain.
