MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin callers may get a new area code starting this fall.
Wisconsinites in the 608 area code region may be assigned a 353 number if they request a new service or line starting Sept. 15, 2023.
The area includes Madison, Beloit, Janesville, La Crosse, Middleton, Monroe, Platteville, Stoughton, Sun Prairie and Wisconsin Dells, the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) said.
PSC said the 608 area code is expected to run out of assignable numbers by the first quarter of 2024, or sooner. The new area code will be used once there are no more 608 numbers that can be assigned.
Those with 608 area codes can keep their existing phone numbers and will not experience service interruptions. Wisconsinites will need to continue to dial area codes with the full phone number to make calls.
PSC said the price of calls will not change due to the area code overlay.
