FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A deputy with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office was killed in the line of duty Friday morning, officials say.

The deputy was responding to a robbery call at 2990 Gillespie Street around 2:46 a.m. After returning from a canine track, the sheriff’s office says the deputy was hit by a vehicle while walking.

The driver left the scene, according to officials, but was quickly found.

The deputy was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment, but later died from injuries. 

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and N.C. State Highway Patrol are investigating the incident.
