STERLING, Mass. - A Sterling neighborhood had an unexpected visitor earlier this week. A moose was spotted strolling near the Maypother Baseball Field Monday morning.

Meanwhile, the Sterling Fire Department also posted pictures of a moose near Greenland Road Tuesday morning. Firefighters were able to help it cross the road. It's unclear if it’s the same animal.

MassWildlife said it's not uncommon to see moose in central and western Massachusetts, especially this time of year which is entering their breeding season.

"Moose are essentially in their peak rut from about mid-September through mid-October with it peaking right around that first week of October” said Martin Feehan of MassWildlife. “During their rut, just like with dear, moose are moving around a lot more. Bulls are finding the cows to be able to breed and so they are moving around the landscape."

MassWildlife said there is about 800 to 1,000 moose in Massachusetts. They said if someone encounters a moose, to give them space.
