Born and raised in Houston, ValleyCats pitcher Corbin Martin has been seeing and hearing of the destruction left behind by Harvey. His father's home was close to being severely damaged.
"He said that the water got up to his door and barely leaking in. He thought he was going to have a lot more water, because his neighborhood got hit really hard," said Martin.
But others weren't as lucky. Thousands had to be rescued by boats and more than 30 were killed. Martin, along with his team, has a close tie to Houston, as the ValleyCats are a single-A minor-league affiliate of Major League Baseball's Houston Astros.
Thursday night, the American Red Cross was on hand at the ValleyCats game to collect donations for those affected.
"We're doing a lot of good work in our relief efforts," said Jennifer Cassidy from the Red Cross. "We've opened up 50 or more shelters down in Texas and opening up even more in Louisiana to help all of the victims. We're providing that immediate relief to them like food shelter and a place to stay."
And Red Cross representatives say every bit counts.
"I just encourage everyone to give what they can, because they really do need us down there, and it's been inspiring seeing the community come together," said Cassidy.
Martin is hopeful the city will recover.
"I really wish I was there helping along with everyone else, but I'm certainly going to send all my prayers out and do whatever I can do help from here," said Martin.
