NORTH CAROLINA - The dangers of river flooding in eastern North Carolina will likely continue into the weekend.  This comes after heavy rain soaked much of the state from Sunday through early Tuesday.  Parts of Raleigh saw just over 8" of rain during that time.

Minor flooding is occurring along the Cape Fear River in Bladen, Duplin and Pender counties. More signficant flooding has been reported along the Tar River near Greenville, Rocky Mount and Tarboro. The American Red Cross has opened a shelter in Tarboro.

The Neuse River has also been above flood stage in some areas. That river has already crested near Clayton and Smithfield but will continue to rise near Goldsboro and Kinston into the weekend.

The National Weather Service says the Neuse River could reach flood levels near Goldsboro that are high enough for the evacuation of homes in the Mar-Mac community and the  Buckhorn Island subdivision.  Access roads around Seymour Johnson Air Force Base may also flood.

In Kinston, river levels are forecast to be high enough to flood the campground and picnic areas at the Nature Center this weekend.

River levels are not expected to reach the record levels set just last year after Hurricane Matthew.
