LANCASTER, Calif -- Months after the deadly fall shooting of Sgt. Steve Owen, the defendant, Trenton Trevon Lovell, was arraigned on Monday.

The hearing opened with a bit of back-and-forth between the attorneys on documents being turning over by the District Attorney.

"We have victims whose names and addresses are out there and so forth, and we're trying to protect some of the really sensitive material in the case," says Michael Blake, Deputy District Attorney of Los Angeles County.

Also, defense counsel renewed its request to prohibit media cameras in court, but Judge Robert Naranjo denied.

Lovell is charged with capital murder, attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a felon – plus, first degree residential robbery and false imprisonment by violence.

He's being held without bail, following the Oct. 5 shooting death of Owen.

The case is now set for a preliminary hearing. At that time, Blake says, the judge will decide whether there is enough evidence to force Lovell to stand trial.

"A preliminary hearing is the prosecution's first opportunity to present the case. It's also an opportunity to test the strengths and weaknesses of the case, get a chance to look at the witnesses, to see, you know, how much they know and thoroughly examine them and also to test the evidence," said Blake.

The preliminary hearing on the case is set for Feb. 15 and pursuant to Court order will occur within 60 days of that date.
