AUSTIN, Texas -- Lower Capital Metro bus rates are now in effect -- that means if you use MetroRapid or MetroFlyer services in the city of Austin, your fare is now $1.25.

That's 50 cents less than what riders used to pay.

It's the same price changed for a single ride on a local bus route.

The price change is a result of Cap Metro eliminating its Premium fare level.

There are now just two fares: Local and commuter.

If you use the MetroRail or ride an express bus, you'll have to pay the commuter fare.

For pretty much everything else, you'll pay the cheaper, local fare of $1.25.

Local fares:

  • Single Ride: $1.25
  • Single Ride, Reduced: $0.60
  • Day Pass: $2.50
  • Day Pass, Reduced: $1.25
  • 7-Day Pass: $11.25
  • 31-Day Pass: $41.25
  • 31-Day Pass, Reduced: $20.60

"It's the first change that comes out of this transit study that we've been looking at called Connections 2025. We have some other changes that we're looking at and those won't go into effect immediately like the fare change," said Melissa Ayala with Cap Metro.

The hope is that the new fare system will make transferring easier for riders.
