CARY -- Wake County School Board members are open to looking at options for a temporary location to send Stough Elementary students while the school is rebuilt during the 2018-19 school year.

Some parents are concerned about sending students about 10 miles away to the Spring Forest Road temporary location, which they say is about a 45-60 minute bus ride.

“We are very concerned that a year away at Spring Forest Road will cause serious damage to the momentum we've created and cause the next generation of families to choose to not come to Stough because they are concerned about this distance,” said Stough Elementary PTA co-president Mark Williamson.

Some school board members are hopeful someone in the community has available space closer to Stough that could be used.

“If anyone in the community has some available space for about 450 students, we are all ears,” said Wake County Board of Education member Christine Kushner.

The proposed total project budget to rebuild Stough Elementary is more than $34 million.

School board members approved a schematic design for the project during a meeting Tuesday night.
