AMHERST, N.Y. -- A suspected underground meth lab in a culvert running beneath the parking lot of the Sheridan Drive Walmart was not active, police said Tuesday in an update.
Officers say they found the lab Monday during a routine patrol. Investigators wearing hazmat suits pulled up buckets of chemicals, spray paint and an unknown liquid.
State Police say the lab was not active, and police in Amherst say no drugs were ever produced there.
"They assessed it, they realized it wasn't an active cook, it was an old lab so, it was remediation time. The dangers to the public at that point were minimalized," said Maj. Steven Nigrelli with the New York State Police.
"What we had were the precursors for methamphetamine. The people involved in this operation were trying to make it, they just hadn't succeeded yet," Capt. Scott Chamberlin, Amherst Police Department.
Police say they're reviewing surveillance video to find who set up the lab underground.
