Watch your step along the Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk.
Kevin Fair of Ocean Breeze walks along the boardwalk everyday. He says loose and uneven wooden planks are cause for concern.
"Sometimes it's raised two inches or so and that can trip the average person up," he explains.
Fair says he's noticed that parts of the boardwalk have been in bad shape since winter.
Nails stick out, loose boards shift, and some boards are rotted through.
As summer crowds flock to the area, Richard Vollpicello of Ocean Breeze says repairs are needed.
"It's terrible," he says. "Screws are sticking out. Kids walk on their bare feet and can obviously get a splinter or a nail in their foot, or a screw in their foot. So, I don't think it's really that good."
The issues were such a concern, that someone took it upon themselves to tie bright shopping bags to the problem planks.
"People have done that just to make sure their fellow Staten islanders don't trip or fall through," Fair estimates.
The Parks Department has since removed the shopping bags. In a statement to NY1, officials say, "The boardwalk on Staten Island is a recreational treasure to everyone that utilizes the space. That is why maintaining the boardwalk is a top priority for us here at NYC Parks."
A spokesman says while carpenters spent days repairing the boardwalk before the summer season, the maintenance is ongoing.
He says crews be out this week putting caution tape around problem areas until repairs can be made.
"I think it's a great idea. The city can't be everywhere all the place all the time. I do think they make the best effort they can out here but there are a few places just like how there's a few potholes in the street," Fair says.
While there are problems, Fair says he will continue to enjoy his daily walks on the boardwalk.
