WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- As transgender rights continue to take focus in the national discussion, Jefferson Community College in Watertown will host a special guest Saturday night.
Laverne Cox from the hit Netflix series 'Orange is the New Black' will host a presentation inside the college's gymnasium. It's called 'Ain't I A Woman' and in it Cox discusses her life growing up in a Christian home to making the transition into womanhood.
Outside of television, Cox has spent a big part of her life as a speaker and activist for transgender rights.
At a time when states like North Carolina and Mississippi have come under fire for recent laws some consider anti-transgender, the school and its students say this event can open up the dialog.
"There are actually a lot of students on campus who are transgendered. I think it's a topic that people don't really understand and this can help them understand and help people that are going through it," JCC student Courtney Corigilano said.
Jefferson Community College's Student Activity Offices say about 300 tickets are left. They are available at the door for $10. Students can get one for free.
